Business Today Reports that the Enforcement Directorate took the 74-year-old Naresh Goyal into custody under the PMLA Act, for allegedly defrauding Canara bank of Rs 538 crore.
The Airline shut down due to losses in 2019, after 25 years in operation.
My 2 Bits
Naresh Goyal's arrest at this time seems like such a shame. The Indian government's attitude to Private airlines has always been: We want private airlines, but we don't want them to be profitable. Jet Airways, with political backing (how else?) managed at one point to get nearly 22% of the market share. It was the only one of the 1st generation private airlines (since liberalization of course), that managed to survive so long.
It kept to schedule, (unlike Indian Airlines and Air India), provided excellent service, and for most of its life, the staff were polite (also unlike its public sector counterparts).
A restructuring effort was underway, but its progress was at best, rocky. The case will probably land up in the Supreme Court, ending in a judgement that will likely satisfy no one.
